A Community-based Approach to Sustainable Urban Regeneration: The LUDA Project

It is generally recognised that past interventions to combat area-based deprivation have proven to be far too piece-meal, lacking the integrity which is needed for cities to tackle the poverty and social exclusion experienced by large urban distressed areas (LUDAs). This paper breaks with this tradition and offers a strategic framework, protocol and set of assessment methods to sustain the regeneration of LUDAs. How this set of tools can be used to combat area-based deprivation, tackle poverty and social exclusion is presented under the title of: a community-based approach to sustainable urban regeneration and serves to outline the findings of the LUDA project.
