Technology Implementation in Language Teaching (TILT): Analysis of ICTs in Teaching English as a Foreign Language

This article analyses the main procedural and implementation features of a European course designed by a Spanish Research Group at Malaga University (Spain). The course target audience is English as a Foreign Language teachers at secondary and higher education as well as teacher trainers, and the course main objective deals with technological implementation in their foreign language sessions. Following a humanistic and an affective approach, the course goals are directed towards an active participation of the attendants. Moreover, ICTs are present in this collaborative process both as a teaching tool and as a material development resource. Obviously, international cooperation is an inevitable aim in this training course, which provides the perfect arena for exchanges among European practitioners who share a common teaching context. The course proposal we analyse includes graded activities in order to motivate students in a classroom of English as a foreign language. Webquest creation, Hot Potatoes evaluations and blog management are but some examples of motivating online platforms to be used in an L2 lesson. This combination of real ICT workshops and later peer discussions leads to a fuller assessment of their own teaching practice, becoming more aware of new possibilities in their profession.

Dr. Lidia Taillefer

Tenured Associate Professor, Department of English, French and German Studies, University of Málaga, Málaga, Andalucía, Spain

Dr. Taillefer received her BA in English Philology at Malaga University (1987), Spain and a MA in Translation at Madrid University (1988), Spain. She continued her studies in USA at the City University of New York, where she obtained a MA in Liberal Studies (1989). In 1995, she gained her PhD degree at Madrid University (Complutense). She has published articles and books, included in outstanding international bibliographic databases, on Applied Linguistics domains such as English Language Teaching, English for Specific Purposes, Sociolinguistics, and Translation. She is a tenured Associate Professor and is head of the research group ‘Applied Languages and Linguistics.’ She has coordinated various linguistic studies such as a ‘Project on Educative Innovation,’ a ‘Teaching Project for the Use of New Technologies,’ and also a ‘Project on an Online Linguistic Glossary.’ She is currently coordinating a ‘Research Network on Academic Writing in English as a Foreign Language’ in the International Association of Applied Linguistics. Moreover, she has been a member of the board of directors of Analecta Malacitana, as well as the administrator of that journal, included in international indexes. She collaborates with universities in Great Britain and the United States both as visiting professor and researcher.

Dr. Rosa Munoz-Luna

Dr. Munoz-Luna received her PhD (2012) in English Applied Linguistics at Malaga University, where she studied English Philology (BA 2006) and English Linguistics (MA 2008). Her interest in language pedagogy facilitated further studies in English Education (BA 2010) and Psychopedagogy (BA 2012) at Salamanca Pontifical University. Dr. Munoz-Luna was given a National Teaching Fellowship, which allowed her to research and teach at Malaga University. While completing her extensive formation on English Linguistics and Education, Dr. Munoz-Luna has published several research articles on language learning and teaching through the use of new technologies. Her action-research commitment makes her explore classroom possibilities with her students, using mixed methods to analyse academic genre awareness and use in university lessons. In 2009, she worked in Exeter University, where she studied for a Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MEd 2010). Her latest work has been published in international journals, and she has won the 2012 Young Researchers Award at Malaga University. Nowadays, Dr. Munoz-Luna is teaching English Theoretical Linguistics at undergraduate level and English Applied Linguistics to Malaga University postgraduates. Dr. Munoz-Luna is currently collaborating with the Pontifical Bolivarian University (Colombia) and Exeter University (United Kingdom), where she cooperates with university experts of language teaching.
